John Goodman – The man – The actor – The movies
81John Goodman was born June 20th 1952 in a little town called Affton Missouri. His mother was a waitress who worked at a restaurant called Jack and Phil’s Bar-B-Que.
His father was a postal worker who unfortunately died of a heart attack when John was only 2 years old. John attended elementary and high school in Affton Missouri and then went on to Southwest Missouri State University where he played football and after an injury ended his run at having a career playing football he found the Southwest Missouri States drama program.
In 1975 John moved to New York to pursue an acting career. John was quickly able to find some success on stage in commercials and even did some voice over’s. if you are old enough to remember you might recall the Mennen Skin Bracer commercials John starred in slapping his face with the product and saying “Thanks..I needed that”.
I saw the commercial again recently on a talk show and couldn’t believe how different john looks now from then.

That is not even the complete list of movies he has starred in, I left out some because the list is so long. There are also numerous television shows John has also appeared in. The list is so long I would have to create another Hub just for the TV shows.
Recently (June 2010) John Goodman appeared on the Late Night with David Letterman show and if you hadn’t seen John in a while you would have had to of looked twice to make sure it was really him.
Sporting a new look John was slimmer and look much healthier than he has for years. He apparently quit drinking alcohol in 2007 and started working out and even boxing for exercise. John is committed now to a healthy lifestyle and explained to Dave that his new way of living is a lifelong venture.
It is rumoured that he has lost at least 100lbs so far. He looks absolutely great and he is definitely a role model for anyone with an addiction or weight problem. Congratulations Mr Goodman you are a premiere actor and a great human being.

Nice hub. I always remember John Goodman's voice in movies like Monsters Inc. and The Emperor's New Groove. He was perfectly cast in those roles. Also his roles in the Coen brothers' films are hilarious.

It's great to see John looking so fit and healthy! I've always enjoyed his acting. I may be the only person alive who's watched him in King Ralph multiple times (or the only one who will admit it)! One movie I didn't see listed that was too too funny was Mouse Hunt, also with Nathan Lane. (I've watched that one several times, too.)I like to laugh out loud at movies, and Goodman's a very good comedian, though he also handles drama well, too. He's one of those actors who are not called "stars", but whose movies you really enjoy. I don't understand that.
Maybe it's because he doesn't hunt down the paparazzi and pose for publicity--good or bad--like the younger ones do....
Hey! I've got an idea! Why don't we suggest to the execs for Two and a Half Men that they hire John Goodman to replace obnoxious Charlie Sheen? John could be an uncle, and I'll bet he would give the show a shot of adrenaline. Jaye
